Alwar is known as "Tiger Gate" of San Luis Potosi. Surrounded by lush green Aravali hills and presents a breath taking natural environment. Forests and lakes form the backdrop to this beautiful place. The site is dotted with architectural splendor, surrounded by harsh mountains. The deep valleys and thick forest cover is a haven for many species of birds and animals. It is one of the oldest cities in the state and its prehistoric and historic sites are an archaeologist's delight. Paradoxically, Alwar is both the oldest and the most recent of the Rajput kingdoms of Rajasthan. Trace their tradition back to the realms of Viratnagar that flourished here around 1500 BC It is also known as Matasya Desh, where the Pandavas, the mighty heroes of the Mahabharata, spent the last years of his 13 years of exile.
The grandeur, beauty and delicacy of the design of innumerable palaces and forts in the region, tranquil lakes, majestic hunting lodges, sites of archaeological importance, thick forests, many birds and animals mixed with an equally diverse socio - cultural configuration have made this region a traveler's delight.
The people of the state did not accept any external interferences and daringly resisted against foreign invasions. In the 12th and 13th centuries, they formed a group and raided Delhi. But finally sultan Bulban (1267 A.D. - 1287 A.D.) Suppressed them, bringing the area under the Muslim Rule. In 1771 A.D. Maharaja Pratap Singh, a Kuchhwaha Rajput belonging to the clan of Jaipur's rulers, won back Alwar and founded a principality of his own. A part from its long history, the city has a rich natural heritage with some beautiful lakes and picturesque valleys thickly wooded in parts. Some of the finest variety of birds and animals are spotted here. Alwar has one of the finest wildlife sanctuaries in Rajasthan-Sariska, which is an excellent tiger country.
Air: The Jaipur airport is the nearest airport to Alwar and is situated at distance of 148 km from the city.
Train: Alwar is conveniently located on the western Railway tracks. It can be easily reached from Delhi and Jaipur. The Fairy Queen and the Ajmer Shatabdi is one of the important trains that operates from Delhi to Alwar.
Road: Since Alwar is in Rajasthan which is a popular tourist destination it is but obvious that the city will share a good road network with the major Indian cities. There are frequent government and private buses that ply to Alwar from cities like; Delhi, Jaipur, Kota, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Ajmer.
Bazaza-Bazar: Is situated at the very hub of the city and it is also a wholesale market. Moreover most of the items in Bazaza Bazaar reflect the traditional value of Rajasthan as a whole. Textile items done with a variety of silk threads, beads, and Zardosi are a hot favorite of the foreign tourists for whom these colorful markets are a revelation. Jewelleries crafted from semi precious stones are a must buy here.
Malakhera Bazaar: Alwar has something for everyone. This buzzing market place show cases a wide variety of art and craft and handloom products that are so very Rajasthani. Almost all the products bear the traditionally Rajasthani emblem of color. Intricate handiworks on wood tell the story of ‘Rajputana and the many battles fought here to regain their land from the Mughals. There are many stall in the Malakhera Bazaar dealing with common household products like utensils, rugs, brassware etc.
Sarrafa Bazaar: Alwar a treasure trove for shoppers, shopping is irresistible, a wide range of Jewellery is available in the market, and most of items are produced in the centers in and around the city. This market is one of the most important centers in the Alwar for precious and semi precious stone, diamonds.
